Bostelman Engineering staff have diverse actual utility experience in wet fuel storage regarding everything from performing spent fuel pool reracks, to coordinating blackness testing, and evaluating BoralTM, Boraflex poison materials. We have over 30 years experience per person working in spent fuel pool environments, which includes spent fuel pool cooling, predicting fuel decay heat, investigating B5b requirements, and deriving pool shuffling strategies. We have extensive hands on experience related to wet fuel storage. We have worked as project leads for two rerack projects at a PWR, been in charge of Fukushima spent fuel pool instrumentation design and installation requirements, prepared multiple technical specification amendments related to wet spent fuel pool storage. Conduct of surveillance of stored spent fuel, maintaining nuclear material inventory.

Areas of Focus

  • Decay Heat Predictions: modeling the various fuel batches for discharge to pool to support normal, full core discharge or emergency offload conditions. This also includes predictions for plants going through decommissioning related to Zirconium fire modeling.
  • Dose Modeling: spent fuel pool boil down and impact from such for FLEX strategies, and for decommissioning processes at site boundaries
  • Rerack projects: removal of old and installation of new spent fuel storage racks. Evaluation of poison materials in pool with surveillance or blackness testing
  • Vendor interfaces: includes coordination of staging, pool work, transport carriers
  • Fuel Shuffling Patterns: deriving fuel shuffling patterns in pool to meet technical specification requirements for pool loading and core offload

Qualifications

  • Former Reactor Engineer Dry Storage: in charge of all fuel movement and spent fuel pool materials
  • Former Lead Project Engineer: in charge of all aspects of spent fuel pool reracking, in charge of Fukushima spent fuel pool instrumentation installation
  • Former Radiation Protection Manager: in charge of RP related to operations at fuel pool
